I'm done CPL 2.0!

I am less of a technophobe than I was a few months ago and I learned all about the awesome things I can do online... if only I could find the time!

CPL 2.0 Week 11 - Twitter

I can see how Twitter can be lots of fun...for other people! The celebrities I wanted to know about don't twitter, so basically I was reading what other people around the world think about them. I loved the Calgary Public Library's tweets, though - super good. If I knew what I wanted to look up, I'd probably have a better go of it. For now, I'll leave twitter to the birds!

CPL 2.0 Week 10 - Library Thing

I liked Library Thing, but found some faults. The author I looked up had over five different profiles, and all with different details...The recommends are misleading, because there are several lists and only some apply to the title or subject that you are looking up. I'm the kind of person who likes to fall down the Novelist rabbit hole and see where the recommendations take me. With Library Thing it gets annoying because I end up being shown novels that are unrelated and just happen to be popular when I didn't ask for them. That having been said, the reader reviews are great.
I will use the site both personally and at work when exploring topics, but definitely not exclusively.

CPL 2.0 Week 9 - Online Productivity Tools

I am a luddite. Really. If I had to go to a computer to use a calendar I would end up homeless, collecting bags of recycling and thinking 'if it weren't for online productivity tools...'
Perhaps that is a bit of an exaggeration, but I am one of those people who has to hold my calendar in my hands, to physically write into it, in order to understand what is going on in my crazy life. The same goes for budgets and other organizers.
Q: Could they replace office software packages? I don't think so. The albums and presentations look interesting, but the pages are busy and the templates are so specific that a person who is wary of technology (such as myself) might just stick with microsoft.

CPL 2.0 Week 8 - Flickr & YouTube

I have not used Flickr, but after having checked it out I am pretty excited. Both sites seem very user friendly. YouTube was revolutionary in this world and also controversial; all the good and the bad is right out there...

CPL 2.0 Week 7 - Bloglines/RSS

It was a little bit tricky to navigate the set-up for bloglines. Once I was in, though, it was hard to stay away. One blogline in particular I like is called the 'Shifted Librarian.' Ridiculously funny stuff, and of course work related info.
Is it convenient to gain more information? Well, yes, but for the most part it is me geeking out on science sites - it is a convenient way for me to magically lose an hour!!

CPL 2.0 Week 6 - Google Products

I like google translate because it is so immediate. I also really like google earth because it is so much fun! They have really put a lot into that program, but I'm still on the fence about the privacy issues...big brother is after you!

CPL 2.0 Week 5 - Facebook

Otherwise known as "Crackbook", facebook is popular because it gives up to date information about people as they go about their lives. Some people are crazy with it, updating every three hours... I think it's bizarre. I use it to find out about events I'm invited to, and to keep in touch with people who live far away. It is easier than emailing sometimes because you don't have to memorize any addresses and you have options as to how you would like to contact a person (a poke, a private message, a public note on their display page, etc..)

Personally I am hardly ever logging into my facebook page, which annoys my friends and family to no end. Yet still somehow I manage to live in the world!!??

CPL 2.0 Week Four - Wikipedia

The editing that I did on wikipedia was grammatical, not factual. It was easy to do...I wonder how many monkeys are sitting in cubicles checking what people write into these articles???? My friend once read some rather vicious racial slurs on wikipedia. I never send kids to the site when I am teaching, but find that they are often using it at home.

CPL 2.0 Week 3 Question Response

Delicious... Mixed Flavours

What are the advantages of storing, sharing, and tagging web content this way? What are the disadvantages?

I appreciate the database because the websites are "librarian approved;" we can trust what we are using with customers to access information. I am used to using search engines so navigating our tags is fairly easy for me, but with the time it takes to load, searching using delicious is frustrating. I also found that it is not necessarily very user friendly, especially for those who aren't used to online browsing. I played around with the different sorting methods, but found that many of them made little difference to the work I was doing. It is best (for me) to force an "All Tags" display so that less likely options come up.
